The nutritional properties: A feast of health

Salmon, a delicious fish known to be a good source of protein and fat acids, has health benefits that go far beyond nurturing us.

Salmon contains essential fat acids for our body.  They are called essential because our body cannot synthesize or produce them which means that we can only obtain then from what we eat.  It contains fat acids such as triglycerides, some D, A and B complex vitamins, plus minerals like selenium, zinc, phosphorus, calcium and iron.

Some salmon benefits are:
Muscles, tissues, enzymes and hormones, proteins, or some small components, amino acids which are essential components of our cells, tissues, enzymes, hormones and all body parts. Salmon proteins(and most fish) are easily digested and absorbed by our body. Salmon is also a good source of fat(omega-3), fat plays an important role in keeping our health. Salmon is rich in essential minerals such as iron, calcium, selenium, phosphorus, and vitamins A, B and D.

Cardiovascular Health

While omega-3 fat acids help lower cholesterol, maintain flexibility of arteries and veins and maintain heart muscle strength, the essential amino acids (proteins) that salmon have, repair damage that cardiovascular tissue may suffer. Omega-3s help lower blood pressure; since it reduces cholesterol levels and maintains vein and artery flexibility they reduce the risk of a heart attack.

Metabolism:Omega-3 fat acids, vitamin D and selenium, help increase insulin sensitivity in our body.   This facilitates the absorption of sugar and therefore lowers the blood sugar level.

Eyes: The omega-3 fat acids and amino acids help prevent ocular degeneration, dryness, loss of vision and eye fatigue. It is proven that people who eat these fish(salmon) regularly have better vision for longer periods of time than the counter part that does not consume salmon.

Brain and Nerves: Omega-3 fat acids increase brain efficiency, improve memory and help keep our mind focused during the long working hours. Together with amino acids, vitamin A, D and selenium, these fat acids protect the nervous system of normal degeneration caused by aging, it also acts as tenuous anti-depressants, they relax the brain and are even recommended for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s treatments.

Other benefits:omega-3 reduces arterial inflammation of the digestive system and reduces the risk of cancer in colon, prostate, and kidney among others. It helps improve skin texture and brightness of the eyes, hair and nails. It also helps the growth of good bacteria in the colon.
